(Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images)One of the biggest criticisms of Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray as an NFL prospect has been his size. Analysts and executives across football have weighed in on the matter, but now his former head coach has decided to give his two cents. In an interview on ESPN’s Get Up! transcribed by 247Sports, Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley gave his thoughts on Murray’s size being a factor. To no surprise, Riley spoke glowingly about Murray and tried to set everyone’s mind at ease over the impact his height would have.“…I’ve had 6-foot-3, 6-foot-4 guys and it was no different. These guys have a gift to be able to do it. I’m not saying every NFL quarterback can do it at that height. They can’t. But there’s guys that are gifted enough and are able to still get it done, still get the ball out where they need it to be and not having tipped passes. These are two of the guys in the world that can do that.”In his lone year as a starter for Oklahoma, Murray led the Sooners to a 11-1 regular season record before beating Texas in the Big 12 Championship game to claim the conference title. He led Oklahoma into the College Football Playoff, only to fall to Alabama in the Orange Bowl.Murray finished the season having thrown for 4,361 yards and 42 touchdowns while completing 69.0-percent of his passes. He was rewarded with the Heisman trophy and numerous post-season accolades.Several days ago, Murray announced that he would be committing to playing football professionally, turning down a deal he had with the Oakland A’s to play baseball. As for his height, there have been numerous players who have thrived at the quarterback position despite their size. Drew Brees and Russell Wilson are among the most recent examples. However, there’s still a lot of time left before the Scouting Combine, let alone the NFL Draft and it doesn’t seem like concerns over Murray’s height will be relieved any time soon.last_img read more

Kanaa Movie Review: Aishwarya Rajesh shines in passable sports drama

first_img Next Kanaa Movie Review: Aishwarya Rajesh shines in passable sports dramaAishwarya Rajesh is extraordinary as an off-spin bowler in director Arunraja Kamaraj’s Kanaa but the film has a predictable story.advertisement Janani K ChennaiDecember 20, 2018UPDATED: March 15, 2019 18:42 IST Aishwarya Rajesh in Kanaa Movie Name: Kanaa Director: Arunraja KamarajArunraja Kamaraja has donned multiple hats and he has been successful in juggling all of them. He has proven himself as a singer, lyricist and an actor as well. Now, he has turned a new leaf and ventured into films with his debut flick titled Kanaa.Arunraja’s determination to make a film on women’s cricket is highly commendable at this point of time when Indian Women’s Cricket is flourishing. But Kanaa, starring Aishwarya Rajesh, Sathyaraj and Sivakarthikeyan, is yet another sports drama with a cliched storyline.Murugesan (Sathyaraj) is a farmer who is struggling to make ends meet. But he is what we call a cricket ‘paithyam’ (maniac). He is in awe of cricket players and even sheds tears when the team loses. Kousalya Murugesan (Aishwarya Rajesh) can’t see her dad in tears, so she has one goal in her life – to represent India at the Women’s T20 World Cup and win it.The storyline of Kanaa is similar to that of many sports dramas such as Chak De India and the recent Irudhi Suttru. But Arunraja Kamaraj has incorporated the farmer angle and their sufferings into Kanaa and woven a cohesive story. Kaana is made to look engaging despite being predictable.Though the economic status of Murugesan’s family shows us their hardships, sometimes it looks a bit forced on screen. Arunraja does a brilliant job in showing Kousalya and Murugesan’s struggles in parallel narration.Aishwarya Rajesh plays an off-spinner to the T. She has perfected the bowling action in a short span of time and it does bring in realism into the story. The fatigue and determination to prove herself in the history of women’s cricket are visible on Aishwarya’s face, thanks to her natural acting.advertisementSathyaraj as a doting father is a revelation in Kanaa. In one particular scene, Sathyaraj is supposed to be grieving for his dead father. Instead, he rushes back into the house every now and then to keep himself updated with the match score. Roping in a nuanced actor like Sathyaraj has done wonders to Kanaa, as his performance keeps the audience engrossed in the otherwise cliched story.Sivakarthikeyan is what Shah Rukh Khan and Madhavan were to Chak De India and Irudhi Suttru respectively. He is a retired player who coaches the Indian women’s team to victory. But his character and performance do not create a strong impact, as SRK or Madhavan did with their respective roles. Sivakarthikeyan is just there, mouthing motivational dialogues.Arunraja has given in to a few cinematic liberties which sort of spoil the engaging factor sometimes. In a scene where Kousalya is playing World Cup T20 semi-finals against Australia, his father looks at the TV screen with such eagerness. But her mother looks at her dad throughout the match, even after Kousalya wins the match. Rolling your eyes? You bet.Overall, Kanaa is a commendable attempt at showing women’s cricket in the best light. However, it falls short of being the best film out there.Aishwarya Rajesh is extraordinary as an off-spin bowler in director Arunraja Kamaraj’s Kanaa, which has a predictable story, says our review.2.5 out of 5 for Kanaa.ALSO SEE | Cricketer Smriti Mandhana to unveil album of Sivakarthikeyan’s KanaaALSO WATCH | Shankar, Akshay Kumar and Karan Johar open up on 2.0Get real-time alerts and all the news on your phone with the all-new India Today app. Download from Post your comment Do You Like This Story?
