Report: Pac-12 eyes Sept. 19 start to college football season

first_imgThe Pac-12 is expected to finalize a plan for its 2020 college football schedule next week, according to a report from the San Jose Mercury News. The Mercury News reports that the conference is expected to announce those plans next week as well. The Pac-12 went to a conference-only schedule in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.   — Flexibility with the Pac-12 championship game, which is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 4. The conference could push that back to the weekend of Dec. 11-12 or Dec. 18-19 if needed.  The Pac-12 model, of course, is subject to change because of COVID-19. California, where USC, UCLA, Stanford and Cal are located, has reported nearly 66,000 new cases in the past seven days, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Arizona, which is home to Arizona and Arizona State, has reported more than 19,000 new cases during that time, the CDC reports.  The structure of the Pac-12 plan, however, is something that the Big Ten — which also adopted a conference-only schedule in 2020 — could follow a similar structure. MORE: College football’s best-case scenario for 2020According to the report, the final scheduling model will include:  — A 10-game conference schedule, with each Pac-12 school playing its five division opponents and five crossover opponents. The Pac-12 typically uses a nine-game conference schedule.  — A Sept. 19 start date, which would have been Week 3 on the original college football calendar this season. There are two bye weeks built into the schedule in case that date must be pushed back again.  last_img read more

Ozil fitness heartens Wenger ahead of Burnley clash

first_imgThe Germany international, who is in the final year of his contract at the Emirates Stadium and could open negotiations about a move away in January, came in for heavy criticism during the Gunners’ stuttering start to the campaign. But his improved recent form has demonstrated the player’s quality and Wenger attributes this to Ozil’s efforts on the training ground.“Mesut has worked hard and he is extremely fit at the moment as well, and that is why you see him sharp,”the Arsenal manager told the club’s official website.“The quality of his technical aspect is always there but he has added a more determined attitude and that is what you want from him.”Veteran French boss Wenger added: “Football today is very demanding in the mental and physical aspects and Mesut is in much better physical shape than he was before. “Every player wants to be a star and when they don’t manage to do it they are really disappointed but the best way to achieve it is to work hard and show the quality of performance that people expect from you.”– ‘Killing instinct of a snake’ –Last weekend’s win left Arsenal in sixth place, a point behind fourth-placed Tottenham with goal difference alone keeping the Gunners above Burnley.Wenger has been impressed by Sean Dyche’s side this season and is well aware of the test that lies ahead for his team. Wenger will restore his first choice line-up after making wholesale changes for the midweek Europa League defeat at FC Koln which did not prevent Arsenal from continuing in the competition as group winners.Danny Welbeck will return to the bench after a 45-minute appearance against the German side but Theo Walcott is out because of illness, while Santi Cazorla remains a long-term absentee.Burnley are boosted by the return of top goalscorer Chris Wood for their clash with Arsenal after the striker missed last week’s victory over Swansea City.Wood returned late from New Zealand international duty with a minor hamstring problem ahead of the win over the Swans, but has since got through a full week of training.Burnley manager Dyche has no fresh injury concerns, although England goalkeeper Tom Heaton is still recovering from a dislocated shoulder.Dean Marney (knee ligament) and Jonathan Walters (knee) have both returned to training but are not ready to be brought back into the matchday squad.Speaking ahead of Sunday’s clash, Clarets boss Dyche said: “When you come across these clubs, it’s a case of how you are performing against some of the most powerful teams — not just the score, but the actual performance level.“Playing against these big teams is a measurement of where we are in relation to them.”Share on: WhatsApp London, United Kingdom | AFP | Arsene Wenger believes Mesut Ozil’s recent resurgence is down to the Arsenal playmaker’s improved fitness levels.Ozil was outstanding in last weekend’s north London derby victory over Tottenham Hotspur and will again play a key role as Wenger’s side attempt to build on that win when they travel to face Burnley on Sunday. “They are the surprise package because before the season if you asked 100 people if Burnley would have 22 points at this stage of the season, 90 would have said no — and the 10 others would have been Burnley supporters,” he said.“They have won games with 25 percent or 30 percent possession, that means they are calm, they know what to do and they are patient with that killing instinct of a snake,” Wenger added. They put you to their face and then they bite you.”last_img read more

World Cup ticket sales simplified

first_imgA Ghanaian journalist walks past theFifa Ticketing Centre in Maponya Mall, Soweto.(Image: Bongani Nkosi)  South African football fans will soon be able to buy tickets for 2010 Fifa World Cup matches over the counter, and collect them immediately.Fifa and its partner, the Local Organising Committee (LOC), launched the Fifa Ticketing Centres at Maponya Mall in Pimville, Soweto, on 9 April. The official ticket design was also unveiled at the event.Organisers have set up 11 venues in the nine host cities where fans can buy tickets from 15 April. Johannesburg and Durban have two centres each.Maponya Mall, Soweto’s first upmarket shopping centre, is home to one of the centres, while Johannesburg’s other centre is at Laico Isle in Sandton.“We have always said that it is important that we make this World Cup more accessible to the people and with the over-the-counter sales, we believe this measure is consistent with the needs of the fans,” said Danny Jordaan, LOC CEO.“We are excited about these new initiatives, which make the process much easier for everyone,” he added. The centres will also serve as collection points for tickets that have already been bought through First National Bank (FNB) branches and other Fifa channels. The new centres will be of great help to fans who aren’t too familiar with bank transactions and who do not have access to internet, Pimville resident Benjamin Mashiloane pointed out.He plans to buy tickets for the opening match on 11 June, when South Africa takes on Mexico, but until now has found the ticket application process quite daunting.“If I give money and I get a ticket on the same day it will be much easier,” said Mashiloane, who stays close to the mall. “Some of the football supporters here in the township are not clued up about the process of money transactions. [The centre] will be convenient for them.”To get tickets, all that Mashiloane and fellow fans need now is to show their identity documents, proof of residence and the cash or credit card to buy them. The centres are open seven days a week from 9am 6pm.About 600 FNB branches across the country, operating five days a week during normal banking hours, will also sell tickets from 15 April. The public can order tickets there and collect them at the 11 Fifa Ticketing Centres or Shoprite and Checkers sales points, of which there are 18 countrywide. “The process is new,” said Fifa. From 15 April, tickets can also be bought through the World Cup hotline, which operates seven days a week from 8am to 10pm. Fans within South Africa can call 083 123 2010, while international buyers should dial 0041445832010.“We have made a big effort to assist football fans by introducing various additional means to purchase a ticket,” said Fifa secretary general Jérôme Valcke. “We are committed to facilitating the process for all fans and are giving them this last chance to attend the matches and experience the excitement of this first World Cup in Africa.”‘Buy tickets on time’With the last sales phase opening on 15 April, Jordaan reinforced the call to South Africans to buy their tickets in time, and not wait for six days until kick-off. All South Africans qualify for the exclusively reserved category-four tickets, which are priced the lowest to enable as many local fans as possible to see matches live.He said having more South Africans at the matches was part of showing hospitality to the visitors. “The final thing is that South Africans must respond. We must be good hosts, and if we’re good hosts it means we must be there [at stadiums].”South Africans snap up ticketsJudging by ticket sales so far, stadiums will indeed be packed with South African football fanatics in their colourful self-styled attire and booming vuvuzela trumpets. Out of the 2.2-million tickets that have already been sold, 925 437 have been snapped up from within South Africa. The US is leading ticket sales overseas, accounting for 118 945 purchases so far. Some 64 654 tickets have been bought in the UK, 32 269 in Germany, 29 657 in Australia and 16 001 in Canada.Only 500 000 tickets are left, although the final, to be played on 11 July at Soccer City in Johannesburg, is already sold out.last_img read more

Credit Unions’ Role Underscored

first_img By Bryan Miller, JIS Regional Office Reporter MONTEGO BAY: Agriculture and Fisheries Minister, Hon. Roger Clarke, has underscored the pivotal role of Jamaica’s credit union movement in advancing the country’s economic development. Speaking at the St. Elizabeth Cooperative Credit Union Limited’s 37th annual general meeting in Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth, on Saturday (April 27), Mr. Clarke noted that credit unions have been particularly instrumental in advancing small business development through the provision of tangible financial support to stakeholders, whom he said are integral to safeguarding Jamaica’s economic future.  “It (credit union movement) is the driver of small businesses; and…the greatest employer of labour (are) those people who (operate) small businesses. You (small business operators) are the real engine of growth; and therefore the credit union, which really deals in a significant way with small businesses, is a critical organization in moving the economy forward,” he contended. Lamenting that the relevance of the credit union is, to some extent, unrecognized, Mr. Clarke gave an undertaking to lobby increased support for the organization by his colleague Members of Parliament, among others. Their inputs, he contended, should serve to better position the movement as a key stakeholder in national development, thereby benefitting Jamaica in the long run.last_img read more

Spice spat Old Bay sues New Bae for trademark infringement

first_imgBALTIMORE — A clash of seasonings is looming in federal court, as Maryland’s Old Bay seeks to protect its trademark in a lawsuit against another spice blend, New Bae.The Daily Record reports Old Bay maker McCormick & Co. sued this week to stop Pittsburgh-based Primal Palate from using the “New Bae” name. The paleo diet-centred Primal Palate launched New Bae as an organic blend in October 2017, touting its suitability for crab legs, fries and Bloody Marys. McCormick asserts Primal Palate has used taglines like “Out with the Old, and in with the NEW” to capitalize on Old Bay’s “fame and goodwill.”The lawsuit says Primal Palate responded to a cease-and-desist by acknowledging New Bae’s name was a “nod” to Old Bay.Primal Palate didn’t respond to the newspaper’s comment request.___Information from: The Daily Record of Baltimore, http://www.thedailyrecord.comThe Associated Presslast_img read more

Country wants pure PM not chaiwala Mayawati

first_imgLucknow: Launching a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BSP supremo Mayawati on Tuesday said the country will not be “deceived” by “dual characters” any more and it now wants only a PM, not a “chaiwala or chowkidaar”. “The country has already seen a number of leaders in form of sevak (servant), mukhya sevak (chief servant), chaiwala (tea vendor) and chowkidaar (watchman), who indulge in misleading the people. Polisario Boycotts Al Jazeera over alleged Support to Moroccos Autonomy Plan

first_imgCasblanca- The new editorial board of the Qatari seems to displease the Front’s leaders. Ahmed Boukhari, the Front’s representative to the United Nations, is one of them. Boukhari announced, last Saturday, November 23, his intention to boycott Al Jazeera channel. According to Polisario news outlet Futurosahara.net, Boukhari explained that his decision was due in particular to the absence of the borderline separating Morocco and the Western Sahara in photos and illustrations featured in Al Jazeera’s reports, which was the case previously. Indeed, in recent months, the channel has adopted a new approach to the Sahara issue, although not always consistent The second reason, according to Boukhari is the short time the channel devotes to the Polisario Front, compared to the time it reserves to Morocco. Ahmed Boukhari was however invited by Al Jazeera to comment on the visit of King Mohammed VI to the White House and President Obama’s praise of Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Western Sahara, proposed by the Kingdom in 2007. But Boukhari decided to decline the invitation. Moreover, Polisario’s radical youth groups have leveled harsh criticism at Boukhari and his “unreasonable” policy, which, according to them, benefits mainly Morocco.Apparently, Al Jazeera wants to distance itself from the Sahara conflict, a change that coincides with Prince Tamim’s succession to power in Doha, replacing his father, who had abdicated in his favor last spring in an unprecedented move in the history of the Arab world. During the years of the reign of Emir Hamad, the chain’s own take on the issue was clearly inclined to the Polisario, a thing that is seen to be largely the cause of the closure of Al Jazeera’s office in Rabat. Currently, we are witnessing the beginning of a “rebalancing” that is expected to be consolidated in the coming months, according to many experts. It is noteworthy that the Emir Tamim had succeeded in 2010, during a visit to Morocco, where he met with King Mohammed VI, to reconcile Doha and Rabat. Since then, contact between the two leaders has been strengthened. This reconciliation seems to now upset the Polisario, which had for long enjoyed the same attention from the Doha’s information channel.last_img read more
