GARDA GOES ON TRIAL FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT OF COLLEAGUES IN GARDA STATION

first_imgA Donegal-based Garda has gone on trial charged with sexually assaulting and harassing two female colleagues. The Garda, who is married and in his 30s, pleaded not guilty to the charges when he appeared at Letterkenny Circuit Court today.A number of senior Gardai including Donegal’s Chief Superintendent Terry McGinn were in court for the start of the trial. The court heard harrowing evidence from one of the two female Gardai allegedly assaulted between November 2010 and May 2011.The Garda faces a total of seven charges of sexual assault and two of harassment.Only one of the women gave evidence in the trial which is expected to last up to three days. She broke down in tears as she revealed she had been sexually assaulted three times by the officer – once in a patrol car and twice in the Garda station in which all three worked. She described how on one occasion he grabbed her arms while she was sitting in a swivel chair and pushed her down a corridor before sexually assaulting her.On another occasion he came up behind her and pressed himself against her.The female Garda said she felt his penis rub up against her as he was erect. She said another member walked in shortly after this incident but did not report the matter as she was afraid her colleague would think she was having an affair with the accused. The woman said that all other male colleagues at the station treated the female members with respect. If anything ever got out of hand, the senior officer would remind them that there were “ladies present.”The Garda said she was forced to attend her GP and told her of what was happening at work.Because of the nature of her shiftwork and because of the alleged harassment and sexual assaults she had suffered, she said she was not sleeping. She also said the accused constantly made reference to their size and told them not to be eating so much or they wouldn’t “get a man.”“There wasn’t a day that went by that he did not touch me or make some kind of comment,” she said. She added that even the sight of him made her skin crawl and she even vomited before work at the thought of having to see and work with himThe female Garda stressed: “All of his verbal and physical contact was unwanted and I never let him believe anything other than that.”The accused, dressed in a suit and tie, sat down the back of the court alongside his wife.Judge John O’Hagan also instructed that no filming or photography of the accused should take place or anything reported that would identify the two female Gardai involved. The trial before a jury of ten men and two women continues tomorrow with evidence expected to be heard from the other female Gardai who claims she was also sexually assaulted and harassed.GARDA GOES ON TRIAL FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT OF COLLEAGUES IN GARDA STATION was last modified: October 30th, 2013 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:GardaharassmentLetterkenny Circuit Courtsexual assaultlast_img read more

Branding South Africa with one message

first_imgThe purpose of the conference is to ensure that South Africa communicates with one voice both domestically and internationally leading up to and beyond 2010.“We are already looking beyond 2010 to where we want to position South Africa in the next decade,” says Yvonne Johnston, the CEO of the IMC. “A major event such as the soccer World Cup attracts global attention but it has to be supported by strategies and structures to ensure a lasting legacy.”“Our objective is to establish Brand South Africa as one of the most prominent and desirable global brands,” says Johnston.Germany 2006 has shown that making the best of the opportunities offered by such an enormous event entails more than hosting soccer games successfully. The host country must brand itself at the same time, as was done so well by the Germans. Therefore one of the key-note speakers at the conference will be the man who did just that for Germany, Mike de Vries. He is the CEO of the branding company FC Deutschland GmbH.Another speaker is internationally renowned Raul Parelba from Spain, who will focus on the branding and marketing opportunities provided by a major event. He is Director Partner of Trout & Partners, the global positioning specialists. The speakers and their topics include:Minister in the Presidency, Essop Pahad, who will look at opportunities for the continent brought about by the World Cup.The CEO of the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), Themba Maseko, who will spell out the government’s commitment to and expectations for 2010.Danny Jordaan, CEO of the Local Organising Committee, who will highlight marketing opportunities for local corporates.Thaninga Shope-Linney, NEPAD’s general manager for communications and outreach, who will add to Minister Pahad’s continental perspective on the 2010 World Cup.Wolfgang Grulke, CEO of FutureWorld will look at Africa and South Africa in the 21st century. Yvonne Johnston, CEO of the IMC, will also be speaking at the Conference – spelling out Brand South Africa’s future strategy in her address. She has very high expectations of the Conference, describing it as “a tremendous opportunity for the world view South Africa even more positively and Alive with Possibility than it does now.”This conference is being hosted in collaboration with the 2010 National Communications Task Team.last_img read more

Drug abuse ‘enemy of freedom’: Zuma

first_img18 June 2013Drug and alcohol abuse are the enemies of South Africa’s freedom and democracy, President Jacob Zuma told young people gathered in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal for national Youth Day celebrations on Sunday.“Alcohol and drug abuse in particular are slowly eating into the social fibre of our communities,” Zuma said, adding crime and gangsterism, child and women abuse, teenage pregnancy and truancy, and mob justice and xenophobia to the list of “cancers that are painfully eating our society”.“Thus our special message to the youth of the Republic today is that you must become an integral part of the struggle against all these cancers.”He urged young people to take up this fight with the same vigour that “we fought apartheid, and the zest that is displayed in our successful fight against HIV and Aids today.“Drug and substance abuse have serious implications for the millions of citizens because they contribute to crime, gangsterism, domestic violence, family dysfunction and other forms of social problems.”He said the government would respond with more determination than ever to the cries of the youth of Eldorado Park, Mabopane, Westbury, Mamelodi and other areas where drugs were wreaking havoc in communities.“As we speak today, many parents are in pain, as they watch their children deteriorating and their lives being destroyed by drugs and alcohol abuse.“I have heard tales of children as young as eight years old who are now addicted to drugs. I have heard tales of young girls who are molested in drug dens.”Drug traffickers, and those who ran illegal outlets that sold alcohol to children, should be declared the enemies of freedom, Zuma said. “They should be ashamed of running businesses that destroy children, the youth and many families.”He said the government and its partners were implementing an Anti-Substance National Plan of Action, and urged communities to play an active role in ensuring its success. He said the plan focused on enabling policy and legislation, reducing the supply and demand of drugs, as well as treating and rehabilitating addicts. He added that there were already 215 local drug action committees around the country that were helping communities to manage their own preventative work at grassroots level.“We need to work with law enforcement agencies to ensure that such people are brought to book. We must report them, so that we can stop them from destroying our communities.”Source: SAnews.gov.zalast_img read more

Canonical Adds OpenStack Support to Ubuntu

Natty Narwhal will include OpenStack, the open source cloud computing platform created by NASA and Rackspace last year. Canonical joined OpenStack in February.OpenStack will compliment Eucalyptus, the open core cloud computing system. “We want people to think of Ubunutu as a Linux platform that is cloud native,” Canonical VP of Business Development told InternetNews.com.NASA started what eventually became OpenStack to in order to replace Eucalypsis, The Register reported last year. Since that time, Eucalyptus has partnered with Red Hat and has been working to make its platform more open.George also told InternetNews.com that while Ubuntu will support two cloud standards for now, it will eventually “bless” only one – much like it has “blessed” the KVM hypervisor instead of Xen.Although OpenStack has met with much enthusiasm from the open source community, some crack are starting to show in its governance model as we’ve reported. Still, it’s a young project with strong technology and serious backing. But Eucalyptus is a formidable opponent in the cloud stack standard race, especially with its Red Hat partnership.OpenStack is only a technology preview at the moment. But this week’s Amazon Web Services outage emphasizes the need for open cloud standards so that servers can be moved easily from cloud to cloud. The clock is ticking. Cue sports league Cue Slam to finally take off in August

first_imgBy Bharat Sharma New Delhi, July 20 (PTI) After years of wait, India will finally stage a big ticket cue sports league in August. A senior official at Billiards and Snooker Federation of India confirmed to PTI that the league titled Cue Slam will finally take off next month. Both Indian, including 16-time World Champion Pankaj Advani, and foreign players will be part of the venture, tentatively scheduled from August 19 to 25. The official launch will take place in Hyderabad next week. Cue Slam was supposed to take place in 2015 but the initiative had to be shelved indefinitely. As per the original plan, it was to be a six week tournament with the presence of eight teams. However, BSFI in collaboration with Sportzlive is going ahead with a week long affair for now with five teams in fray. The organisers are keeping only 6 Red snooker and pool event for the inaugural edition, leaving billiards for future editions. When asked about his thoughts on the league finally taking off, Indian great Advani said: “It is finally happening and it is something that our wonderful sport needed.” “I have always felt that cue sports is a very spectator friendly sport and it should be shown on Indian television a lot more, so that it catches up with the popularity of other sports. “I hope the league will grow and become bigger and better with each passing year,” said Advani, who won the Asian snooker title with Malkit Singh Laxman Rawat earlier this month. The league should keep the fans engaged with each contest not expected to last more than 10 minutes. It will also be shown live on a leading sports channel. “Having our sport shown live on television is something I have been talking about for a while. The other leagues that have taken place in India are all shown live and because of that the sports popularity has grown significantly. “I am pretty confident a lot more people will start following our game with the league being shown on television,” Advani added.
