Player of the Season to sign for Manchester United?

first_img1 Riyad Mahrez is a frontrunner for Player of the Season Would Riyad Mahrez improve Man United’s faltering attack? WhoScored.com reveal just how good the Algeria international has been this season…If Leicester’s 2-1 win against Chelsea on Monday night did not consolidate their place as Premier League title contenders, then little else will. The Foxes may have ridden their luck during periods of the second half in the victory, but the three points ultimately lifted them back to the summit of England’s top tier.Jamie Vardy, N’Golo Kante and Christian Fuchs were three to come away with plenty of credit, but the star of the show was Riyad Mahrez. The Algerian received the WhoScored.com man of the match award with a rating of 8.95. It was the eighth time he’s won the accolade this term – more than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues – and the fourth in his last six league outings.Mahrez’s WhoScored.com rating (8.37) is also the best in the Premier League this term and many at this stage of the campaign already believe the Leicester star is the front runner to win Player of the Season ahead of the likes Vardy and Mesut Ozil. The aforementioned duo may have impressed for Leicester and Arsenal respectively, but Mahrez has simply been a step above for the Foxes, building on a respectable debut campaign last season in the top flight. The 24-year-old has been directly involved in 18 league goals, (11 goals, seven assists) more than any other Premier League player this campaign, which has helped propel him into the spotlight.Talk of a move in January has understandably gathered pace, with Manchester United reportedly keen on Mahrez, but the attacker would be wise to remain at the King Power Stadium given United’s monotonous attack at present.Under manager Claudio Ranieri, Mahrez is able to express himself in the final third and has made more successful dribbles (54) than any other Premier League player this season. That return is the sixth best in Europe’s top five leagues this term and accentuates his WhoScored.com strength of ‘dribbling’. His showing against Chelsea, though, was one that really stood him in excellent stead.Mahrez gave left-back Cesar Azpilicueta the run around before the midfielder was substituted in the second half.Azpilicueta was widely considered one of the better full-backs in the top flight last season, yet was made to look a run of the mill defender against Mahrez, with the highlight coming when he twisted and turned before firing an unstoppable curling effort past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The Spain international struggled to contain him, though that shouldn’t be a stick with which to beat the Chelsea full-back.Azpilicueta wasn’t the first and he certainly won’t be the last full-back Mahrez embarrasses over the campaign. His form has been more impressive than any would have expected, with Ranieri helping the young wide man take his game to the next level. Should he maintain this consistency over the hectic festive period and into 2016, it would be nigh-on impossible for him to be overlooked when the nominees for Player of the Season are announced closer to the end of the campaign. For more stats on Riyad Mahrez, click here to view his WhoScored.com player pagelast_img read more
