first_imgNovember 24, 2020 /Sports News – Local Weber State Men’s Basketball Commences Season Against Adams State Wednesday Brad James Written by FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailOGDEN, Utah-Wednesday, Weber State men’s basketball commences its 59th season at the Division I level (the Wildcats are 1051-629, . 625 at the Division I level) by hosting the NCAA Division II Adams State Grizzlies of Alamosa, Colo.The Wildcats are coming off a 12-20 campaign (8-12 in Big Sky Conference play) in 2019-20 and return only four players from that squad.Those four are Czech national, senior forward Michal Kozak, senior guard/forward Kham Davis and sophomores, guard KJ Cunningham and forward Donatas Kupsas, a Lithuanian national.The Wildcats return only 27 percent of last season’s scoring, the 12th lowest such percentage in NCAA Division I which consists of 357 schools.The Wildcats boast three transfers this season, Dutch national junior forward/center David Nzekwesi (University of Denver), junior guard/forward Tavian Percy (New Mexico) and junior guard/forward Zahir Porter (Independence C.C.; New York Tech).Weber State returns 15-year head coach Randy Rahe (2006-present; 278-173, .616) who is Weber State and the Big Sky Conference’s all-time leader in wins.Rahe has led the Wildcats to five Big Sky Conference titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances (2007, 2014, 2016).The Grizzlies represent the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference as they meet the Wildcats on the hardwood for the first time in each of these schools’ histories.Weber State is 5-0 all-time against schools who are currently in the RMAC. The Wildcats are 40-18 (.689) all-time in season openers at the Division I level and 33-4 (.891) in such games when opening at home.The Grizzlies went 8-20 (6-16 in RMAC play) last season and are coached by sixth-year head coach Russ Caton.
