Irene was unanimously appointed to the Hoboken Board of Education (BOE) in 2009 after years of volunteer service to the students of Hoboken. She has since served on every single BOE committee and frequently fills in when other members are not able to attend committee meetings. Irene currently chairs the Curriculum Committee and also serves on the Communications Committee. Irene takes her Board commitment seriously – she has only missed two meetings in the last eight years. Prior to her BOE tenure, she actively participated in the Wallace and Hoboken High School PTOs, as well as the Student-Based Youth Center Community Liaison Board. An enthusiastic volunteer, Irene has always been ready to work and is continually motivated to serve others.Irene’s most important contributions include bringing transparency and fiscal responsibility to the BOE as well as supporting the search for our popular Superintendent, Dr. Christine Johnson. She has worked to ensure the growth of innovative programs for our children, including the stellar Early Childhood Education Program, the Passport to Learning universal aftercare program, and Project Lead the Way, which includes STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) offerings five days a week across the district.Irene was a founding member of the Hoboken Family Alliance and was the 2010 recipient of the Elks’ Citizen of the Year Award. Most recently, she has inspired a new generation of families to follow her lead and become actively involved in the district schools, from which the schools have benefitted greatly. As parents of children in the district schools, we are grateful for Irene’s exemplary dedication to the Hoboken community. There is so much work that lies ahead and we look forward to Irene’s continued contributions in advocating for our schools.Sincerely,Vera SirotaGina DobsonSung KimLinda KwokSarah RaynorKristina Sutter NashMichele DalyChetali KhannaJean Marie Mitchell Dear Editor:We write this letter in support of Irene Sobolov and her tireless advocacy for the Hoboken Public School district.
