World record Daredevil Felix Baumgartner skydives from 242 miles above Earth

first_imgSKYDIVER FELIX BAUMGARTNER has made aviation history – setting a new world record for the highest ever skydive. The Austrian daredevil jumped from a record 24.2 miles above Earth – setting new world records for the fastest human freefall, the highest skydive and the highest manned flight in a balloon. The 43-year-old jumped after a 140-minute journey brought him from a base at Roswell, New Mexico to 128,000 feet above ground at about 7:10pm Irish time.He was in freefall for about four-and-a-half minutes before deploying a parachute and gliding to the ground – landing on his feet.A spokeswoman later added that Baumgartner had broken the sound barrier in his freefall back to Earth – becoming the first person ever to do so unaided. His capsule was being parachuted back to Earth, and carrying a trove of readings and data which engineers hope can eventually be used to ensure the safety of regular civilian spaceflight.Baumgartner, an Austrian daredevil and skydiver, had been preparing for the mission for years – and in July successfully jumped to Earth from 18 miles. Two attempts earlier this week had to be aborted due to inclement weather conditions, and today’s attempt was delayed for several hours as mild ground winds posed a risk to the balloon that was bringing the Austrian into the air.The mission director for the Red Bull Stratos project, Joseph Kittinger, held the previous record for the highest skydive, at 19 miles.last_img read more

MIT drug could kill nearly any viral infection

first_imgAntibiotics are wonderful things — in certain cases, of course. While they’re incredibly useful at combating harmful bacteria in our bodies, they are completely ineffective against viral infections. Even in the case of something as comparatively harmless as the common cold there’s not an antibiotic around that can stop it in its tracks. That’s how it’s been for decades, but now a group of MIT researchers has developed a new drug that may radically change the way viruses are treated. Dubbed DRACO (Double-stranded RNA Activated Caspase Oligomerizers), the new antiviral agent seeks out RNA in cells that have been modified by a virus. While DRACO’s design allows it to penetrate any cells, the presence of virus-generated RNA makes the cells unique from any healthy cells found in humans or animals. If DRACO doesn’t see that modified RNA,  it leaves a cell alone — otherwise, it binds itself to the cell’s RNA and initiates the self-destruct sequence. So far, testing has been performed on cultured human and animal cells, and DRACO’s results were extremely positive against infections ranging from polio to various rhinoviruses. Live mice have also been tested,  and subjects that had been infected with the dreaded H1N1 influenza virus were completely cured following treatment with DRACO. Researchers have now begun testing on other viruses in mice.Along with its potent broad-spectrum offense against viruses, DRACO also offers another significant advantage over the handful of existing antiviral agents. Whereas its precursors are fairly susceptible to viral resistance, DRACO is not. Stanford professor of microbiology and immunology Karla Kirkegaard says that with DRACO “it’s hard to think of a simple pathway to drug resistance.”While it might not be as “Star Trek” cool as printable organs or an actual medical tricorder, there’s no denying DRACO’s awesome potential.More at MITlast_img read more

Post a comment The problem with most entry-level laptops: They come with mechanical hard drives. That makes for a mighty slow Windows experience. This Lenovo model features a 128GB solid-state drive, so it should be pretty quick to boot and load software, even with its basic processor. Plus, it has a DVD-burner! Vijay Sethupathi to play lead heroines father in his 2nd Telugu film

first_imgVijay Sethupathi has two Telugu films in his kitty nowPR HandoutTamil actor Vijay Sethupathi, who is fondly called Makkal Selvan by his fans, is making his Telugu debut with Chiranjeevi starrer Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy. This film is the biopic of Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy, who is said to be the first freedom fighter from the Telugu speaking people. Vijay will be seen playing the role of Raaja Paandi, a Tamil-speaking guy who is said to be someone like an assistant to Narasimha Reddy. While this is his first Telugu film, he had signed the second one a few months ago. This film is titled Uppena and marks the debut of Panja Vaishnav Tej, the younger brother of Panja Sai Dharam Tej, and nephew of Megastar Chiranjeevi. Vaishnav will be seen playing a fisherman in this film which is going to be a commercial entertainer. Kriti Shetty, a Mangalore-based damsel, will make her debut as the leading lady.It is learnt that Vijay Sethupathi is going to play the father of the heroine. And this role is said to be an author-backed role which is going to be one of the highlights of the film. Sources have reported that Vijay was impressed with the script and immediately gave his nod to the film which is being bankrolled by Mythri Movie Makers. The film is currently in the pre-production stage and is expected to go on floors in the next couple of months.Uppena is being directed by Buchhi Babu Sana, who is a debutante. Babu has assisted director Sukumar for many films and has become popular after writing dialogues for Rangasthalam with three more assistants. Launched a couple of months ago at a star-studded event, Uppena is touted to be a romantic drama.Vijay Sethupathi has bagged consecutive hits like Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, 96, Petta and Super Deluxe in Tamil and now, the 41-year-old actor is looking for content-oriented films in other languages too.last_img read more

Call of Duty Mobile Gets Battle Royale Mode

first_img The upcoming mobile version of Call of Duty may be a smaller take on Activision’s huge military first-person shooter series, but it’s still getting the biggest mode around. Like last year’s Call of Duty Black Ops 4, the game will include its own battle royale mode where 100 players compete to be the last one standing. Battle royale shooters are huge on all platforms, including mobile, so it’s exciting, if expected, news.Solo, duo, and squad play are all available. Players can choose between six classes. There’s a new “dog tag retrieval” revival system. And you can play in either first- or third-person. For more on Call of Duty Mobile’s battle royale mode, read Activision’s blog. And for more on Call of Duty Mobile in general, keep reading this story.AdChoices广告Activision may not have as much as it used to, whether it’s blockbuster franchises like Destiny or the 800 employees it unceremoniously laid off. But it still has Call of Duty, dammit. While not quite as monolithic as it used to be, the military shooter franchise is still pretty freaking huge on consoles and PC. But millions upon million of people also play games (and spend money) on their phones. Activision should know this, it spent six billion dollars on the Candy Crash creators King. So now Call of Duty: Mobile is gunning for all the money.Developed with help from massive Chinese conglomerate Tencent, Call of Duty: Mobile is a free-to-play take on Call of Duty’s popular online multiplayer modes. It brings together elements from previous games set in the modern, non-WWII era. That includes guns from Modern Warfare as well as specific maps like the classic Nuketown from Black Ops. We’re curious to see how Call of Duty’s famously tight gun-feel works on a touch screen though.Like the recent Black Ops 4, Call of Duty: Mobile doesn’t seem to have a single-player campaign. However, its multiplayer offerings, at least right now, also seem limited to standard modes like Team Deathmatch and Frontline. So it also probably won’t have the new “Blackout” battle royale mode, which seems like a missed opportunity since Fortnite and PUBG have managed to work well on mobile.Call of Duty: Mobile goes into beta this summer with a full launch hopefully not too long after. You can pre-register now for more updates. And pour one out for Gameloft’s Modern Combat, the Call of Duty clone that pretty much had the space all to itself on mobile for years until now.For more on mobile gaming here’s why no matter what happens with Activision Blizzard’s upcoming Diablo Immortal we still lose, and read our thoughts on mobile gaming in general right now after playing augmented reality Angry Birds on new iPhones.
