Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest We should see sunshine across the state again today, our last day of pleasant weather before shifting into a wet period for tomorrow. Clouds will be on the increase this evening after sunset. Scattered showers move in tomorrow, and continue through a good part of Friday. Rain totals are still expected to be minor at up to a half an inch with coverage at 90% of the state. However, some models are trying to ramp up those rain totals a bit. We are standing pat this morning. Clouds will try to give way to from west to east as we move into the later part of the day on Friday. The weekend starts nice on Saturday with plenty of sun and mild temps. However, on Sunday clouds will increase ahead of our next system. That system is coming a little faster but still has some good moisture with it this morning. That being said, we are going to shave a little off the top end of the event in our forecast right now. Showers can start to fall after midnight Sunday night in far NW Ohio, but will generally wait over a majority of the state until Monday morning. Rains then continue through Monday night, ending by sunrise Tuesday morning. Rain totals are expected in the .5”-1” range and we are keeping coverage at near 90%. We do thin that thunderstorms are no longer a significant concern, although we wont rule out a couple here and there. With out the thunderstorms, the highest end of the previous rain range just is not likely. The map at right shows precipitation totals from now through Tuesday morning. Tuesday features a mix of clouds and sun, and while we can’t rule out a shower or two, we don’t expect a lot of moisture in this time frame. However, it is becoming clear that we can’t quite get through the day with no moisture. These widely scattered showers will end up with coverage at 30% or less. Partly sunny skies are expected for Wednesday. However, rain then moves into southern Indiana Wednesday night through Thursday morning, bringing up to .3” with 80% coverage. We likely miss out up north. The rest of Thursday we turn out partly sunny and see mostly sunny skies on Friday. The extended period stars off drier, as we are moving our bigger rain chances back a couple of days. However, there is significant disagreement among many models on how the pattern unfolds with regard to timing and intensity of precipitation going all the way back to the midweek system for next week. Right now, are going to keep the 13th and 14th mostly dry, but then look for several waves of moisture coming through for the 15th through the 18th. Those waves still can bring big rains, with 1-3” possible combined. However, again, the timing of the moisture and fronts is not set in stone by any means, and we could be seeing some changes in this forecast from next Wednesday forward over the next few days. The overall total moisture for the period is similar…but when and how does it come through?

Just over a month later, the $1,000 has been collected and Harte says he is now “having a lot of fun” coding on his hacked unit…and likely watching some free Hulu. A group of developers called the GTVHacker dev team cracked the code on January 5, opening up the Google TV platform to brave, screwdriver-wielding developers everywhere. (Video proof inside.)“What this means is that we now have a complete Android development environment for the Google TV,” explained Harte in an email. “I am able to use standard Android development tools to develop for GTV, just like developing for any other Android device.”Don’t expect this hack to be widely adopted by Hulu-loving GTV fans everywhere, however. Jailbreaking the Logitech Revue unit involves opening up the box, soldiering some wires onto the circuit board, and then going through a relatively lengthy software hack.“The most important thing for developers though is that they now have full access to developing for the platform well in advance of Google releasing the tools,” wrote Harte. “Now, it should be possible for Rovio to port Angry Birds […] to the Google TV.”The GTVHacker dev team recorded a video of its jailbroken Logitech Revue unit, showing off “bypassed content block and custom application install.” Take a look at Hulu on Google TV and more:Update: Harte contacted us with a few minor corrections, writing “the actual bounty paid was $500, since the rooting process involved a hardware hack. The $1000 bounty was for a software-only hack, which unfortunately did not happen. The original terms of the bounty stated that ‘a partial consideration of $500 will be given for a hardware hack’ and that a hardware hack is defined as any hack which involves opening the Google TV device. One other minor correction, I don’t use it to watch Hulu, I only use it to develop apps…”What, if not free Hulu, does a jailbroken Google TV mean, then? First off, it’s likely that someone will come up with a software-only jailbreak at some point in the future. Beyond that, however, giving root access to daring developers means that, when Google finally opens its Google TV marketplace, developers will have had a head start figuring out the ins and outs of the system. We’re curious to see where Google TV could go with the innovation of the developer community. For those of you interested in all the geeky details, here’s Harte’s explanation:The GTVHacker dev team consists of five members, and was started by Zenofex, who was able to connect a terminal to the Revue’s UART1 serial port. This involved opening the Revue and soldering three wires, so it qualifies as a hardware hack. After connecting the serial terminal to UART1, Zenofex found a root shell running in Recovery Mode. With that, he had root access, but no way to install apps.Zenofex enlisted the help of four other software hackers to assmble a toolchain for compiling the necessary tools to add “ADB” support to the Revue. Adding ADB, which is the Android Debug Bridge, allowed installing apps with standard adb commands over the network interface (either Ethernet or WLAN.)With that complete, Apps that were written in Java would run fine on the Revue, and they had “Astro File Manager” running in short order. At this point, Zenofex contacted me to get a copy of my “Better Terminal Emulator Pro” app, which was required to be shown running on the Revue in a YouTube video under the terms of the “Root Bounty” offering. It turned out that Better Terminal Emulator Pro, which relies heavily on Native (CPU-specific) code did not run on the Revue. What was needed was Google’s Android Native Development Kit (NDK) for Google TV. Since that was not officially available, one clever GTVHacker member was able to combine the NDK from the Android-x86.org project with Intel’s toolchain to produce a working NDK for the GTV. With this done, they recompiled the native shared library used by Better Terminal Emulator Pro for the GTV, and BTEP installed fine on the Revue and works.
By Carol ChurchMoney is an incredibly common area of conflict for couples, and it can be a really serious one. Some research suggests that fighting over money is one of the most common causes of divorce, especially if the fights are particularly angry or intense. It’s hard, because learning to negotiate finances with another person can be really difficult. We all have our own styles of saving, budgeting, and spending, and what feels right to one person may feel really wrong to another. And in most families, at least some of the time, it can feel like there just isn’t enough money to go around.Perceptions of Spending Styles MatterSo how can partners reduces some of the destructive stress around finances? Surprisingly, one recent study found that some of the problem may be our perceptions about our spouses’ spending styles, more than anything else. In this research, men and women were asked how much financial conflict they experienced along with various other questions, such as how much they earned, how they thought their partner did with money, how much money stress they were under, and so on.When the researchers tallied the results, they found that the #1 predictor of financial conflict was men’s belief that their wives were “bad with” money, which negatively affected men and women both. It also wasn’t good when women thought their husbands were bad with money, though this was less serious. Most of us might have assumed that being under financial stress or not earning much money would predict money conflict the most. It did– but not as much as thinking that one’s spouse was an over-spender. Even couples with plenty of money and few financial worries suffered when someone believed their partner to be a money waster! This problem is especially tricky when you consider that “tightwads” and “spendthrifts” often tend to be attracted to each other and end up together.Image via Pixabay.com/CC0So, how can partners who are experiencing financial stress due to different money personalities (or even just the perception of different money personalities!) improve their situation? One way to handle this is to work on a realistic budget together that allows for each spouse’s hobbies, needs, and interests. If there is frequent conflict over purchases, it may be useful to create a small “fun money” account for each spouse that can be spent as each person sees fit, without spousal discussion. (If the saver wants to put the money in the bank, that’s fine too!) But aside from that account, make a rule not to keep financial secrets from each other. Sometimes false perceptions come about because one spouse suspects the other of “financial infidelity”—hiding spending—even when it isn’t true.Although it may be surprising to learn just how powerful our perceptions can be when it comes to financial conflict, it may also help to know that some of this issue may just be “in our minds.” Financial disagreements with a spouse or partner are difficult, but are something that can be overcome.Save the dates of our 3-part Family Finances Series which begins July 10 with a webinar on Separation & Single Parenting in the Military.References:Britt, S.L., et al. In the City of Nawabs, security officials deployed at the Lucknow Metro stations are on a task to sniff out tobacco from commuters and have weeded out over 20 kg tobacco products in the first two days of its launch. Metro passengers in the city have been trying various tricks to smuggle tobacco and related products inside coaches. “The passengers, who are in the habit of carrying tobacco products, are not ready to give up and try to smuggle it pan masala and other products in their pockets, socks and belts,” a security personnel deployed at the Charbagh Metro Station said.“During frisking while entering Metro premises, officials were able to collect approximately 20 kg tobacco and other related items like pan, pan masala, cigarette etc. from commuters,” LMRC MD Kumar Keshav said. The confiscated items will be handed over to the municipal corporation for disposal.“I am very thankful to commuters for their cooperation in frisking and keeping the metro clean. Lucknow Metro is a green and environment friendly public transport and it is our duty to keep it clean. The efforts of LMRC and public will definitely help in keeping metro a clean public transport,” the MD said. Many of those caught gave excuses that they were not aware that tobacco products were not allowed inside the metro. “Out of five, every third commuter was carrying a tobacco product and was found chewing tobacco. It is a difficult task to check them. But we are on our toes and committed to keep the metro clean,” a security member said. The 8.5-km-long ‘Priority Corridor’ from Transport Nagar to Charbagh, which is part of the Phase 1 of the project, is operational from 6 am to 10 pm everyday.Over 32,000 passengers had boarded Lucknow Metro on the first day of the commercial run on September 6 while the number came down to over 28,000 on the second day.LMRC has set a target to complete the entire 23 km track from Amausi to Munshipulia by March 2019. This includes a 3.5 km underground track between Hussainganj to Hazratganj.

Lifter Karnam Malleswari was one, and she won a medal. Gurcharan Singh was the other but he missed a medal by a whisker. The light heavy weight reached the boxing quarter-finals, losing out on a place in the medals tally through a points decision that could have gone either way. Now, six months after the Olympics, Gurcharan Singh, 24, has landed Indian boxing a punch that has left it reeling: he has disappeared.Gurcharan, a serving naib subedar with the 17 Sikh Battalion, went missing in mid-February. His disappearance was kept under wraps until last week. With the passage of time, Indian boxing’s worst fears – that lured by professional boxing Gurcharan has possibly escaped abroad – seem to be coming true. What is more disturbing is that he is not the first but only the latest in the list of runaway boxers from the army. In 1998, Lakha Singh and Debendra Thapa, scheduled to participate in the World Military Boxing meet, slipped out of a Texas airport on the pretext of shopping. They never returned.Gurcharan’s disappearance has come at a time when his coach G.S. Sandhu and the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) were charting out plans to shape him into a world-class boxer. The federation had sent Gurcharan home to his village Roorewalin Punjab’s Ludhiana district in the second week of February to fetch his passport for an advanced training trip to the Czech Republic. But Gurcharan failed to report at the pre-departure camp in Delhi.advertisementUNHAPPY: Gurcharan Singh felt let down after the Sydney OlympicsWhen the IABF informed the Services Sports Control Board (which sponsors army sportsmen) of Gurcharan’s no-show, they checked with his family and were told that he was last seen boarding a bus for Delhi on February 16.”It’s a big blow to Indian boxing,” says Rajesh Bhandari, IABF secretary. Gurcharan was considered young and talented enough to develop into a world-class boxer. “He was a sure bet for boxing medals in the international arena,” says T.L. Gupta, a boxing coach at the National Institute of Sports, Patiala. When Gurcharan returned disheartened from Sydney, having missed out on a medal, the IABF promised him greater international exposure and even wrote to a dozen countries known for top boxing coaches and training facilities. Says Bhandari: “The idea was to help him overcome the setback and get on to a systematic training schedule.”At one stage Gurcharan did appear to have set his heart on his sporting career, turning down suggestions of marriage from his family saying it would affect his training. “He was determined to make another attempt at a medal in the next Olympics,” says father Jagir Singh, who retired as naib subedar from the same unit which Gurcharan joined in 1992.His family is surprisingly stoic. “He was heartbroken over not being recognised for his feat at the Olympics,” says Jagir Singh. He reels out instances of hurt and neglect that Gurcharan shared with the family before he went missing.Gurcharan Singh is the third army boxer to have disappeared in the past three years. The boxer’s main grouse was with the army authorities who had expressed their inability to provide him an out-of-turn promotion after his Sydney performance. His last promotion as JCO was in 1995 when he won gold in the SAF Games.According to the family, Gurcharan wanted the army to treat his Olympic feat on a par with that of a medal winner – a case reportedly made by the IABF as well – but it was turned down on grounds of being beyond the purview of existing rules. All that the army had offered him, says the family, was a cash incentive of Rs85,000.The IABF had also collected Rs 3.5 lakh but before they could hand it over to Gurcharan, he disappeared.”His ill-treatment by the army was the turning point,” says Jagir Singh. The denial of promotion apparently angered Gurcharan who had an argument with a senior army officer in Delhi. “He had a feeling that it was the end of the road for him in the forces,” says his father. In January, Gurcharan had even contacted lawyers in Chandigarh to get him self discharged from the army. On finding that the procedure was long and cumbersome Gurcharan opted to become a deserter. There are others who say that the treatment by the Punjab Government affected the boxer more deeply. The Government refused to acknowledge his Sydney achievement. To add insult to injury, the authorities’ refused even to instal a priority telephone connection at Gurcharan’s home. On the other hand, cricketer Harbhajan Singh was honoured by the chief minister with a plot, Rs 5 lakh and a Class I job.advertisementPICTURE OF DESPAIR: Gurcharan Singh’s parents at the family home in Roorewal village in Punjab”The neglect by the state Government added to Gurcharan’s desperation,”says Jagir Singh. IABF officials feel that neglect may be only a part of the reason behind Gurcharan’s disappearance. “The lure of money in the professional boxing circuit abroad may have been too tempting for him,” says one. There is talk that Gurcharan had been in touch with foreign pro boxing clubs after his strong showing in Sydney. According to boxing circles there is good reason to believe that he is already abroad. The incident has also brought into sharp focus a trend among top Indian amateur boxers of moving towards professional boxing. “It takes at least Rs 10 lakh per year to groom a boxer of Gurcharan’s calibre,” says an IABF official. If Gurcharan has indeed fled for the brutal high-stakes world of pro boxing, he won’t be the first. In 1994, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Dharmendra Yadav joined a professional club in the UK, followed by compatriots V. Devarajan, Sanjeev Kumar, Vivek Yadav and Raj Kumar Sangwan. They have tried their luck in professional boxing abroad without much success. Significantly, all the three run away boxers and most of those who turned professional were from the Services, raising questions about the lack of incentives for boxers in the armed forces. “Once the amateurs get trained abroad, they are desperate about the lack of incentive and facilities back home,” says Gupta. All the three boxers who deserted come from poor, rural families making them vulnerable to the lure of money attached to pro boxing. Unlike the private sector, the army – the mainstay of most national-level boxers in India – has stringent rules on promotion of sportsmen. Only an international medal makes a boxer eligible for a one-rank promotion.Worried at the Gurcharan episode, the IABF officials meet in Shimla on May 13 to chalk out a plan to stem this drain of boxing talent. “The key to retaining promising boxers lies in talking to them and keeping their morale high,” says Bhandari.Little wonder, one of the lessons that the boxers are being lectured on at the national training in progress at Shimla is on the pitfalls of professional boxing abroad.
