Hamilton city council is willing to spend thousands of dollars a day to oppose the opinion of its own planners in a legal battle over student housing. Residents in the Ainslie Wood neighbourhood in Hamilton’s west end oppose a plan to convert a former single family home on Winston Avenue, into a house for students, with as many as 15 rooms. Despite the approval of city planners, the Committee of Adjustment has decided to pay an outside consultant to support the neighbours in a board hearing. That could cost the city up to $5,000 a day. Council still has to ratify the decision on Friday.
